Step Two: Determine Timeline and Template

The second step of the process is to determine the pacing guide timeline and template. This decision includes whether the team will develop the pacing guide by grading period, unit of instruction, or some other timeline configuration. We recommend that teams develop pacing guides by grading period or unit of instruction. If teams develop a narrower guide, for example, by week or month, teachers are more limited in their ability to adjust instruction to meet the needs of the students in their classrooms. Table 6.1 and table 6.2 (page 98) offer examples of pacing templates that could be used for this process. Table 6.1 is an example of a trimester grading period pacing guide that includes scales.
